Becks headed to Sydney
David Beckham and LA Galaxy have signed to play a one-off game against Sydney FC in November.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) secured the promotional coup, conditional on the participation of the English superstar, News Limited reported.
The match is scheduled for Sydney's Telstra Stadium on November 27 with FFA to spend the profits on the entire A-League.
"It is my pleasure to announce that Football Federation Australia has negotiated for the LA Galaxy, including their new star recruit David Beckham, to play a one-off match against Sydney FC...," FFA Chief Executive Officer Ben Buckley said.
"This historic event will be Beckham’s first appearance outside of North America for LA Galaxy, and his first visit to Australia."
Buckley revealed that the concept of pitting A-League clubs against 'high profile international club opponents' would continue in the future.
Acting NSW premier John Watkins said the deal, supported by the state government and Telstra Stadium, was a major coup for Sydney.
"In the world of sports entertainment there is no bigger name than David Beckham."
"News and coverage of this match will showcase Sydney not just in the US, but in football playing nation’s right around the world."
"It reinforces Sydney’s reputation as a truly global city with the pulling power to attract marquee events."
Tickets for the historic encounter will go on sale to Australian fans later this month through Ticketek, with Sydney FC members and members of the Football Family receiving priority access.
LA Galaxy had planned an Asian tour but cancelled all but the Sydney leg.
