LATELY...

Do you know what's failing miserably? I got 0.5/10 for one of my tests. None of you probably believe it though. Even the tutor didn't believe it, because the previous test I got 9.25/10. Anyway, I wasn't too upset about it, because I had expected a bad mark (but not that bad!)...I had a crappy week that time, and I was in my phase of "hating science altogether". It's time to move on.

But things have picked up since then. Thanks to ER. Really. Watching Abby as "the nurse who intubates", and her determination to finish med school (despite everything that has gone wrong in her life) really motivated me, and got me back into med science once more. Back to the stage where I once was, when I'd hear some term on ER and went straight to my textbooks to look up what the term meant. It was my choice to do med science, no one forced me into it. I shouldn't complain. So I'm not going to anymore. I really hope my classmates stop complaining because pessimism is beginning to drive me crazy. Guys, you chose to do the degree you wanted to do - think about the less fortunate people who wish they could attend uni or education of some form, but they can't afford to or physically can't do it. I don't want to sound mean or anything, but I'm sick of all the complaining. It's starting to affect me. For the past 7 weeks you've been complaining...you know, life isn't just about getting good grades. And you aren't expected to understand all the material after one single lecture. If you don't get something, don't complain to me about it - go consult the lecturer or tutor! Please let me be the optimist I once was.

Yes, it's been nothing but ER for the past 3 weeks! I've been downloading clips (I must have about 50 by now!) to watch, and all these memories are flooding back. Those wonderful Carby scenes... There's gonna be a "ER behind the scenes" segment on Getaway tomorrow night! Followed by the next ep of ER! Yay!!! I met another net friend today. He's Rod, who trained as an enrolled nurse in the navy for 4 years and is planning to run his own backpacking/bed & breakfast business. He's a Maura fan from Perth who's gonna mail me a copy of Oxygen VHS free cos he has a spare! We were chatting about Canada and the US, and that -2?C is tee+shorts weather for people in Winnepeg, whereas that's Snowy Mountains weather for us! And apparently Manhattan is a safer city than Sydney...oh God... And Boston's a lovely city to walk around too... I'm now considering a trip to the US at the end of the year, but can I bear the cold? Can I afford the trip? Of course, I'd like good company too...

Graphics group project is underway, and it's fun! My job is to look for a graphic (suitable for a postcard) of each of these sins: avarice/greed, lust, gluttony and sloth by Friday night. I'm thankful my fellow team members are friendly peeps and are also enjoying this new gen ed course just as much as I do. We call ourselves "team dance" cos just now, we realised that we watched Strictly Dancing on ABC every Friday night, and we did various forms of dancing back in primary or high school. :P

The Student Diagnostic Unit was great, even though it took up most of our mid-sem break. At first it seemed a little intimidating due to the pathogenic nature organisms we were dealing with, and the fact that we had 8 hrs a day with only a 30min lunch break, for 4 days. Oh yeah, and the 3 tests that we had to do too. But I ended up really liking the SDU. So what exactly is SDU all about? We were provided with samples of urine, faeces, wound swabs and throat swabs, and had to diagnose the causative organisms based on the patient reports and of course, using microbial techniques such as microscopy and culturing the samples on various media. It's amazing how much easier it is to learn from first hand experience compared with just reading slabs and slabs of notes. That's probably because I hate reading textbooks though!

Here's an inspiring pic - Abby graduates from med school! I'd like to be doing that one day - soon :)
